Maternal and Child Health provides prenatal and postpartum maternal and infant health education and services. We offer services via in-person, phone, or zoom for prenatal and postpartum women and families with infants up to one year of age. Services are provided by a Registered Nurse or Licensed Social Worker. A Certified Medical Interpreter is available for Spanish if needed.
Services include-
Our cornerstone, a prenatal education series called Becoming a Mom® launched in Saline County in 2010. Curriculum from the March of Dimes delivers this evidence-based series to expecting families in Salina and surrounding areas at no cost to the participant.
We are also excited to offer the comeback of the Incredible Years; Parents and Babies Program®. Our "Incredible Babies" sessions help caregivers of infants understand what your baby age 0-12 months is trying to communicate to you, as well as the developmental milestones they will be hitting. 6 weekly classes of evidence-based bonding and communication time during 1-hour sessions will be available virtually, from the comfort of your own home!
Finally, we are pleased to launch our "Bosom Buddies" Community Lactation Closet Initiative. We are accepting donations of new or gently used nursing bras and other new or reusable breastfeeding supplies for mothers in need in the community. Through our lactation counseling and home visiting services, we have had an increase of mothers who lack the ability to access supplies for breastfeeding comfort and hygiene. We hope to gain community support to assist these mothers.
Our in-house Spanish language interpreter is available for all services and all classes offered. Medical interpretation in other languages is available upon request.

How do I enroll in your services?
Our MCH staff provides weekly rounding to our local birth center, where postpartum home visitation and community services are offered to new parents. * Consent to let us speak with you about services MUST be signed during your admission process at the hospital in order for us to speak to you. Your nurse can assist you with the consent during your admission paperwork.*

Not exactly. While our in person and in home visits are for Saline County residents, we are happy to meet via zoom with anyone who does not have that particular service available through an MCH program with their home county health department. In addition, we have collaborated with several outlying counties to assist in the facilitation of prenatal education virtually and referral of home visits received through hospital consents.
All services are provided at no cost to the participant.

Our staff regularly visit our local birth center to collect consents for contact when you deliver your baby.
It is one of the many papers that you will sign when you check in to have your baby.
If you consent, after the baby is born, we may come in to your room and ask you if you would be interested in any services we have to offer.
If we happen to miss you, don't worry! We always reach out via text or call. As long as you selected "Yes" on your consent form, we will get in touch.

Sherri is the Maternal Child Health/Becoming a Mom prenatal education Coordinator and has been with the Saline County Health Department since 2015. In addition to her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, she is a Certified Lactation Consultant and Certified Perinatal Mental Health Consultant. She and her staff are currently serving the perinatal populations in Saline and McPherson County.
“Having the opportunity to provide home visiting services and education to our prenatal and postpartum parents in our communities has been very rewarding," she explained. "We have built this program with staff who have a passion to make a positive impact with the families we serve. Through support and collaborative efforts within our medical community, we are making a difference as we strive for healthy mothers, healthy pregnancies, and healthy babies.”
